Central AC HVAC leak

We just had our 3rd hvac company out to assess the massive coolant leak we are experiencing. #1 said he was ordering a new coil and then ghosted us. #2 said he doesn’t work outside during the winter so call back in the summer. #3 said our outside compressor is leaking, and a line running inside, as well as the coil, so he can order all those components and the job will be $17.5K ? *not including cost to replace all the drywall/trim/paint that needs to be removed to run the new line. Can anyone please share experience with central air leaks/repairs and companies that are great and anyone to avoid. $17k seems actually insane. We have already spent about 1200 on diagnostics to locate leak source.

i have seen it with plumbing in older (1950’s) buildings where we began getting steam leaks in the heating system all at once and we knew what was happening. but for the a/c to do this at 7 years old seems a little premature.

HVAC is not regulated so watch for the fly by nights; use your online reviews and resources to vet them as well as the way they represent themselves in person and in communication after the visit.

Multiple points failing at the same time is common; it actually happens all the time on different types of systems from Heating to Cooling to Plumbing. Think about it this way: wouldn’t it be weird if one section failed and all the others were fine after seven years of common operation?
Plus there could have been a smaller leak for a long period of time and now a larger leak shows the issues more vividly.
My suggestion here is to replace the system if there are that many points of a leak. Get a few different quotes, compare the quotes AND the companies, choose your combination and get it done before the Cooling Season starts. A lot of companies are known to increase costs once the “demand” season comes in.

@homeInspector The unit was installed during a gut reno in 2016 for a 2-fam brownstone (before I owned it). It is no longer under warranty.. The unit services 1 unit- 2 floors. The line coming inside is definitely leaking, they showed us how it is losing pressure. But it is strange to me as well how the outside unit AND inside unit are leaking as well, all at the same time. I will follow up with the questions you suggested. If anyone can recommend a reputable residential HVAC company that can service complicated leaks I’d love to hear it!

i do not understand how three components leak at the same time unless the equipment is very old or has been neglected. he may be correct about what is wrong but i would ask for explanation as to exactly where each component is leaking. where is the compressor leaking? internally? a fitting? a crack in the compressor housing? (if this was a compressor on a big unit in a big building i would wonder if a head gasket is shot). Also the line. where in the line is the leak? is it at a fitting or in the middle of the line? can the fitting be changed? a line can be long with several fittings. and the coil, that has long line all bundled up. where is the leak? maybe he can answer these over the phone.

i am not telling you to ask him all of this so you can be a pain in the ass to someone who might really know their job but you have to be sure he really does know his job. you want to be sure he is telling you all of this because it really has to be done and not simply because it is easier to say this and change it all (i am not talking about the money or him making more money; sometimes people get lazy about diagnostics – they check to a certain point and say what’s the point of checking the rest so they make an assumption based on what they have seen). maybe he is correct and maybe it is better to do it all. sometimes yes, sometimes no. but making him tell you the why this might have happen and a location for all of these leaks is a good start.

if he does not want to take the trouble to tell you all of this, find someone else. if he were standing in my shop looking at piles of tools, he would have this conversation with me as a matter of course before he even left the house.

They should be able to show you where the leak is based on pressure loss and then give you the options that apply.
It sounds like he is virtually replacing that entire section of the system or maybe even the whole system itself; for that, 18K can be right on point.
