cellar hatch rec needed

Has anyone recently had a bilco style slanted cellar hatch installed or built? Did you buy the hatch already made from Home Depot or the like and then have it installed or did the installer provide the hatch? About how much was it?

As part of a cellar renovation, we changed both front and back hatch doors (old ones were shot).The front was fabricated by an iron worker (can’t recall the name), thick, heavy, beautiful, embossed iron, but actually so heavy that I cannot push it open from the inside, only lift it from the outside. Not exactly what one wants for egress (classic example of form over function). The one in the back was bought at McDonald Roofing in Brooklyn, made by Potter Roemer, installed by my contractor. It’s a roof hatch insert, it comes with pistons for fast egress, and is the one we use for ventilation, weather permitting. Function over form? Depending on its longevity which, at this time, is still an unknown.

My history with cellar hatch doors is that iron-worker fabrication yields a heavier gauge, suggesting safety, but lifting a bit harder. Try discussing with Jacqueline Lopez-Steel Account Manager at Park Ave Building Supplies on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn.

I spoke to an ironworks company about doing this long ago but we never proceeded. Was pretty pricey. It was hard to understand what they were proposing, but it seemed like they intended to custom build (or at least custom adapt) a new hatch.

has anyone got one of these from an iron works place like Lopopolo? What would be the advantage of a made-to-order one compared to a Bilco one?
