carpenter

I have posted on the Forum earlier this week with a bit of a saga regarding a queen size box spring that won’t make it up the steps of my tight steps to top floor of Victorian. I was suggested to me on here to purchase a split box spring, which I didn’t even know existed, and is a great idea, but one is $350 incl delivery. A company to come and dissemble/reassemble the box spring is $250. Can anyone recommend a handyperson whose skills would encompass this kind of work and be willing to do this relatively small job for maybe $100? We (enough family members) are available to do the heavy lifting part (carrying it up the steps). Thanks in advance.

I try not to get too hung up on forum ettiquette usually. It’s stressful doing a renovation, and if the OP figured it out, or got help here and forgot to follow up I’d be inclined to give him a break.

In this case I think the problem is, when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. You’re doing a reno, and you’re thinking you have to disassemble the house or mattress with a contractor to get it through, or hoist it through a window, but when you take a break for a minute you’d realize there has to be an easier way.

so it is great to know about these things urbandad mentions because when this happen to us it was frustrating and like you, we had no idea that there was a solution.

i tried googling 30″ wide box springs (qun is 60″) and guess what, raymore and flannagan came up and you can have a pair of them, me thinks, for $216 and can have them tomorrow. not sure if that includes delivery. but that is less than the assembly price of the other kind you were thinking of, right?

i kind of figured these were cheap as i do not recall any complaining about cost when we had to go through this. we were happy and i never gave it another thought until i saw this post this morning.

You’re overthinking it. Get a box spring from zinus or similar that you can assemble like ikea furniture. Like this https://www.zinus.com/products/smart-metal-box-spring?variant=32781092192319 They also have preassembled ones that fold it in half, and foundations that basically serve the same purpose. Have a spring matress that needs more frequent slats to support it? Add a bunky board or put some plywood in there. I bet you can buy a product online shipped to your house for between 100-250 bucks depending on what features you want.

so my apologies, i got suspicious of some things and decided to check measurements. our box springs are not two twins but something made for a queen size mattress and are 30 wide each – the split box spring. but there was no assembly for these. we laid them on the frame and set the mattress on top.

does this mean that a “split box spring” that needs assembly does not exist? i do not know. my guess is ours came from something like 1800 mattress and if you call them you might ask some questions.

i lifted my mattress to see if i could get a stock number or something for you, but there was no tag.

i do not understand. we went through this here and guess what i am a real finish and stair carpenter and i decided it was not worth the risk to remove part of the stairs so we ordered what you call a “split box” spring. IN SO FAR AS MY MEMEORY GOES (15 years ago) there is no such thing as a split box spring that needs assembly. what we ordered were two TWIN box springs. these are the regular size box springs that all of us had on our beds as children and teenagers. check the measurements of the queen and the twins in a catalogue and check the length that should be the same and double the width of the twins and it should equal the queen. simple. you can set it all up yourself. no tools, nothing. people add fancy names to things to charge you and me more money.

on a side note, when we went through this on moving day, i got my sawzall out and cut the bottom piece of steel running across the box spring and we folded the box spring to get it up the stairs. i had considered welding it back together but decided that was too much a fire hazard and end ed up connecting it back with hoses and clamps until we were able to get the twins.

if what i am saying does not add up, come back here later and repost and i will check and see what box springs we ordered.

I never thought how big a project this would be. Our contractors don’t want to do it as they are on other jobs and the tradespeople they have at our (tiling, plumbing right now) don’t want to do something they know nothing about. I emailed 20 men with vans and noone has responded. (sigh)BTW there was a platform bed like this big up there when we bought the place….it’s an attic that has been converted to bedroom and a bath. We had to saw the platform (old, rotted) in half to get it out. Windows are small, mullioned panes that lie about where they lay….ooops, I mean there are small mullioned sidelight windows on either side of a larger center window, too small for anything to get through.
