Canned spray foam around heat pipe?

Is it ok to use the canned spray foam around a steam heat main in basement? I just want to close up the opening around the pipe to keep critters out but not sure how it will do against a super hot steam pipe.
The metal escutcheons won’t work in this spot unfortunately so hoping spray foam is ok. Any advice?

I’ve done that before. You may as well use the orange fire block foam. Since the steam pipes tend to move as they change temperature I wrap some aluminum foil around around the pipe beforehand so the foam does not adhere to the pipe. After the foam has cured you can trim and clean everything up with a utility knife.

Use foam if it’s a small area. As you mention, will be easier.

It’s basically a spot separating the finished portion of the basement from the unfinished part and since it’s an abnormal sized opening, the fiberglass wrap I have elsewhere won’t work well in this spot without looking weird in the finished area.
Critters aren’t really a problem currently but just want to close up any potential pathways.
What about the firestopping version of canned foam?

what are critters doing in your basement. I would use pipe foam and tape similar to what CR describes.

Fiberglass pipe insulation, along with some high-temp aluminum foil tape would be a much better choice, and cheaper.
