FWIW we had our kitchen moldings stripped before painting- – just nnt as perfect a job as we’d needif we were ggoing to give them a nnatural finish, but enough for the details to be sharp. IMO they look good with semi-gloss paint. HHowever we ddidn’t want the room to look new since, bucking current trends, we prefer period look over glossy and mmodern.

I wouldn’t use a semi gloss or especially a gloss if the moldings aren’t in perfect sanded condition as the layers of paint over the years will look bad with gloss. Stick to flat on walls and satin or eggshell on trim.

Most of my wood moldings are u
npainted, but the ones (in my kitchen) that are have semi-gloss, My plaster moldings and walls mostly have eggshell paint.

I personally like semi-gloss on wood moldings and flat on plaster moldings.

There’s no rule about degree of gloss; it’s an individual aesthetic decision.

I like BM “Super-Hide” White. Comes in flat or semi-glass and has good coverage for the price. My choice for trim (semi-gloss) and ceiling (flat) paint.
