Can I paint around electric meter and breaker boxes?

Our electric meter and breaker boxes are affixed to a wood panel. Our contractor said the wood panel couldn’t be painted to pass Con Ed/DOB inspections. Now that we’ve passed all our inspections, can I paint the wood panel or will I be setting myself up for problems (noncompliance with some Con Ed/DOB requirement) down the road should we have to sell?
