Can front garden cause flooding and water in cellar?

About two years ago we redid the paving in our small front yard and added a 9×6 or so small front garden. This is just a patch of dirt with no concrete over it. In the last year or two, we’ve had newish problems with dampness when it rains and sometimes flooding (when we had snow on the ground for weeks in February) coming up through the floor in the front of the cellar. I’m not sure we didn’t have issues before but in the last year or two the amount of water seems to have increased. The paving in front is all slanted away from the house. Could our issue be the garden? Certainly our exterior walls are very old and I don’t expect they are waterproof by any means, nor is it practical to think we would waterproof them. Nonetheless the water does not seem to be coming in through the walls. Is there anyone on the forum who has a front yard and can speak to water issues or who knows if front yards are supposed to be set in gravel or some other material or method to keep water away from the house?

Except that her sewer line is above the cellar floor level, so any back up would be noticed. On the other hand, it could be a break in the house connection. That could have a similar effect. TVing the line could show that.

Have you checked your sewer line for obstructions? The only time I had water seeping in from the front, it turned out my roommate was using baby wipes. The “water” did not smell or look like sewage, by the way.

Maybe try watering your garden like crazy with a hose to simulate a heavy rain and see if that causes water in the basement?
Using a hose in different areas of your property at separate times might help you to isolate the location.

Yes you have to tackle this on multiple fronts unless you know for sure. Even then better to do have a drain and fix the front etc.

A neighbor of mine had a similar problem & had to have the foundation resurfaced. Pavers were moved away & the wall was water-proofed.

A drain is good idea. We added a drain with proper pitch and still had water coming in via the front.

Yes, that’s right, Urbandad, the garden is near the sidewalk. It’s a good way from the house — about 5 or 7 feet away. And the paving and all is very much slanted away from the house. No storm drain in the yard. I’ll check into French drains. Thank you!

I’m assuming you added the garden away from the house near he sidewalk? Is there a storm drain in the yard? If everything is pitched properly you could try a french drain or other solution. There are many houses where the foundation meets the soil, and many solutions to deal with drainage, probably few of them perfect.
