burst water main -plumber recommendations

We will soon close on a Greenpoint house where the connection to the water main has been turned off at the street level due to a burst pipe (in the house or in the street, we don’t know). We need a plumbing company to install a copper pipe from the existing tap connection on the city main to inside the front wall of the building and connect to the existing house piping with a new house control valve. This will involve digging up the street. Any recommendations? Thanks.

While some like myself can afford the high cost of sewer and water line replacement where does that leave those many more home owners who cannot particularly those who live in low income neighborhoods. As mentioned this should be the responsibility of the City not homeowners. You would think the politicians who represent those neighborhoods would do something about this.

i think i got 3 likes on the above, not for my comment about the price differential, but for what i say about the city charging us a little more for the water each month and shouldering more of the responsibility for the repairs, at least when the problems are out in the street. there is something else i didn’t mention here: i suspect these pipes are damaged by other contractors working in the road – con ed, the city, the gas company – and then left to leak years later. why does one homeowner get stuck with a big bill for things that might really be outside of their control and no fault of their own? shouldn’t we all share the burden for some of this? at least in the road? that is the way it is in other cities.

we can like comments like these all we want on this board but unless we pick up a pen and complain to city hall, our misguided leaders will remain with their heads in the clouds and nothing to help them focus on what the citizenry need. and right now they, and homeowners with such problems, can use some help.

On our street the price changes by about 20% depending on what side of the street you are on as the main is not down the middle.

For a city and mayor who want to help people with limited means, one way to do that would be to find a way to have the homeowner shoulder less of the cost of this. Any other place i lived besides nyc, the homes had a water meter at the front of the property. The homeowner was responsible from the meter to the house. Not the connection in the middle of the road. If they cannot find a way to make that change, would it be better if they just scratched the insurance with american water and charged us all five dollars more a month and took responsibility to the property line?

For some years I’ve had “insurance” from American Water Resources to cover cost of sewer replacement. I recall that it was reported on this site some resistance when a claim is made.

FYI I got around to checking, I have quote from 2017 that came in at 14,900. I’m sure it depends on exactly what the exact situation is, how far to the street, what kind of access is available, what obstacles are there, etc.

Hi Cate, I wish I knew a secret to this, but they actually just did what they were supposed to. After they did the job, a crew put down asphalt. Then maybe 2 weeks later another crew came and poured a new flag. A few years ago coned did the same thing. It may be luck depending on the time of year, or the location, I’d guess they try to consolidate where the crews are working but honestly I don’t know.

I did learn this. You can get a homeowner permit to replace the flag yourself. It isn’t a particularly a fun task, but sometimes you just want something done.

Urbandad, how did you ever get the gas co to replace the sidewalk? Kudos to you. ConEd/Verizon/National Grid — whoever they are — they’ve all of them been digging up our street for years and have certainly made a mess of our sidewalk. We repaved just a bit of it this past summer. Quite expensive.

Bob,
Figliolia did our water main 35 years ago as well, but they also replace our sewer connection 15 years ago. They were fine and had enough staff to do the bulk of the work in one day.

I recently used Harris for replacement of sewer line from inside basement to middle of street. They were great, completely recommend them.

Harris is the one I like the most. They actually turned down a job I had because they did the think it was a good idea to install the sewer so low. The others were all happy to do the job, but Harris was 100% right when I checked it out. I’d bid it out to Balkan, Harris, and maybe one smaller one. Consider whether you need to do sewer or electrical updates at the same time and whether this could save money with the digging and pavement repair. I knew the pricing well a few years ago, but I don’t remember it, could possibly find it, but probably will be a while before I get around to checking.

Recently when the sidewalk was open, I managed to get the gas company to replace my gas line for free. It was in poor condition, but serviceable. You might look into that. They even replaced the sidewalk that needed to be opened.
