Buried Backyard Drain?

With last week’s heavy rain, I’ve noticed quite a few posts about wet basements and drainage. My basement took on some water, too, and I’ve been trouble-shooting causes.

In my research on possible issues, I learned that my backyard downspout is supposed to, by code, fed into the main drain that goes under the house and out to the street. It doesn’t — It comes down from the roof in an ordinary downspout and I have fed it out to the backyard about 15 or 20 feet from the house.

I also don’t see a drain anywhere, near the house or out in to the yard. While I don’t think this is the direct cause of my basement flooding, now that I know about it, I’d like to fix the downspout and bring it up to code.

My house (a 1880-is brownstone) was renovated when I got it, and there’s a new backyard slab that starts at the foundation and goes out about 12 feet. Do I have to dig up the concrete to find the pipe? What if it isn’t there at all? Where should I look? And, most of all, WHO does this kind of work?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

your downspout should have been connected to a trap in the basement which in turn would connect to the main line otherwise it is a code violation….forget about finding a drain in the backyard. Backyard drains are often dry wells, a drain connected to a gravel bed a few feet down. Any competent plumber can correct the situation…if you need more advice contact me at errol832000@hotmail.com
