Just recognize where the structural envelope ends. You can’t heat or insulate what is exposed to the outer elements(up or down or at the sides).

A vestibule is great for not only keeping cold out and street noises out, but also keeping dogs & small children in from trying to escape as soon as the door opens.
I have installed a couple of vestibules recently; the price can vary greatly depending on the current conditions, the quality and style of finishes used as well as the need to finish adjoining spaces etc.
So all anyone could give you is a very vague estimate of costs: $2,500 – 10,000

I just expanded my vestibule, and I’m super happy about it. My house had a small one that didn’t really have room to turn around in. We extended it out to the edge of the step, adding almost a foot. Now it’s really a mudroom where we can hang coats, store umbrellas, etc.

The builders and architects of these buildings knew what they were doing. Vestibules make sense, for baffling street noise, drafts, and the aesthetic pleasure of having that transition from being outside to being inside. It allows us to take a breath, whether as an occupant or guest. We literally shake off the rain or snow, the dust of the street, and then move into the house. What does one do with the extra space? A chair, some artwork? Not worth it, if you ask me.

I bought a brownstone where they removed the vestibule. I noticed an unbearable draft and also noise from street level. I am in the final stages of adding the vestibule back in. It was quite an endeavor. It involved opening back up the entryway, putting up new drywall, electrical work (moving doorbell, adding lighting in vestibule, etc) adding moulding, adding tile, purchasing two sets of custom built doors to replicate original doors. It was about twice as much as I thought it would cost, but in the end….I LOVE IT. No more draft, no more noise on the street, a perfect little mudroom. Couldn’t be happier with the decision.

I’ve put one in my garden level and one on the parlor floor as well. I find it makes a huge difference in sound muffling and keeps your house insulated.
