Brownstone wooden moldings and mirrors and sinks

Hi: I’m renovating and have a good deal of honey colored wooden moldings and mirrors. And two marble sinks.

I am certain you could find a restoration reclaimer that would remove it. I would suggest you reconsider doing a tear out though. Not sure how long you have lived with it but maybe live with it some more before committing to getting it removed.

A salvage place may be interested, if you are intent on ripping it out, but there may be a way to work whatever you need (such as another bathroom or washing machine) into the existing space and keep the casings. A neighbor in the row may also be thrilled to take something.

i would keep it. a lot of people get around a lot of their dislike for such heavy wood by painting it a light color. but i would never get rid of it. how many times have i heard “i wish i had not done that” or “i wish i still had that”

i almost removed the plaster crown when we moved into the house we are in and after doing a little work on it and painting it up, i grew to like it. 15 years on i look back and wonder what had me thinking it would have been ok to remove it.

So many beautiful details. It’s rare to find those passthroughs so intact, including the original hand-painted sink and woodwork with its original finish. Gorgeous! I agree with other commenters you’ll reduce the value of the house ripping them out and won’t get much for them as salvage. If it’s not in good repair, it can be made so by people who know what they are doing. As well, it’s easy to keep the existing features and floor plan and use it however you would like. You’re not restricted to using it exactly as they did in the 19th century. Check Strom/Sign of the Crab for great-quality replacement faucets, drains, nickel supply lines, claw-foot tub shower risers, and so on.

People have different aesthetics so I understand. If you didn’t want trim, you might have saved some money buying a property without original woodwork, which typically have a lower asking price.

I’m with Jane here, especially on the door casing/trim. Assuming the door trim is original (which it seems to be, although it’s a bit tough to tell since it’s in such good condition), it’s definitely a valuable (and invaluable) asset to a brownstone. I’m sure that’s not what most contractors would tell you, as a lot of them seem to prefer to rip everything out to put in new (and usually inferior quality) products, preferring perfectly plumb lines to old-growth wood and character. Otherwise, if you’re dead-set on selling, you might find someone interested here, or Facebook marketplace, or eBay. But the resale value won’t be anywhere near the value the casings will provide to your home intact. (I know this as I once got some 19th century trim from a brownstone on the UES, and the demo contractor just charged me what it cost his guys to rip it out.)

I really hope you’ll reconsider and keep at least the door casings intact. They are beautiful and hard to replace if you change your mind later. It’s easy to paint or stain them a different color if it’s the honey that doesn’t appeal to you.
