We’re moving into a new brownstone. What are the common utilities that need to be setup to get the house up and running? And where to signup?

What I have so far…
1) electricity – con Edison
2) water / sewer – ????
3) internet – Verizon
4) cable – Verizon and other subscriptions
Anything else??

I like Toter but they can be pricey – the hunter green version is available at Lowes and Home Depot.

FWIW the postal service is installing new theft-proof mailboxes; the box closest to me was replaced a couple of months ago. Thefts shouldn’t be a problem from the new boxes that have a narrow slot for letters, as opposed to the old wide door. Nevertheless I use online bill payment and, on those rare occasions when I have to mail a check I do so from the post office.

Do not drop cheques in the mailbox, they get stolen and cause you lots of trouble. Pay bills online

@little pea. Mail is placed in big blue street mailboxes which are found every few blocks. like most other large cities with multu-unit housing. Packages have to be taken to the post office. You’ll get the hang of it.

One note about receiving mail, and this has come from the mouth of our carrier: they no longer are going to the top of stoops to delivery mail unless it’s been done that way for the past 20 years (grandfathered delivery status). Our carrier suggested we invest in a mammoth multi-box contraption that can hold mail and packages for our tenant and ourselves. I pointed out that that was north of $700 and they just shrugged. “Depends on how important your mail is to you,” was the response. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks! Along a similar note, how do you send outbound USPS letters from a brownstone? I don’t see a mailbox that has a red flag that you can raise like in the suburbs.

We have a two family 3000 sf and water bill is under $200 every quarter.

NeoGrec what is a big water bill? No-permitz what is cheap.?
Water prices have gone up in NYC pretty consistently in the past decade. We have four 1.6 or 1.25 gallon toilets, low to normal flow showers and an efficient dishwasher and use a fraction of city avg water (according to DEP) and ours ranges from 50-100 month. I think that’s kind of expensive.

Water & Sewer is the NYC DEP, that should have been registered by the title company when you bought the building. Check your closing details / package that your Attorney sent you after the closing.
