Brownstone iron railing design

My contractor asked us what type/design of iron railings we want for our small 2-family brownstone. It’ll all be new, but won’t be one of those grand brownstones, and I have no idea where to look for design options. My neighbors’ railings aren’t very inspiring. Anyone have recommendations to find images or shops? Pinterest hasn’t been very helpful.

Some ‘scrolling’ is advisable to give strength to the uprights.

Thanks, all. We have a blank slate as our entire stoop and stairs had to be built. We won’t have window gates, because we got new, contemporary windows (2 windows wide, but one big one), and our railing will definitely have to match our understair gate, but am at square one.

Do you have decorative window bars or a gate on your under-stoop entrance? If so, you can copy the pattern used on those.

If you stick with the basics and nothing heavy or too ornamental, you are looking at just a basic set of vertical iron rods spaced a standard distance apart, with a handrail at the top and a base just a few inches off the ground to anchor the rods. Two variables — twists and scrolls. Older look has a twisted rod every third, fourth, fifth or some other repeated interval of rods. Also, they can solder in scrolls, again repeated at a regular interval of rods. More modern look is to forego the twists and scrolls. Look around — you will see these choices everywhere. My rec — add the occasional scroll and perhaps twist if your facade has some historical heft to it –brownstone or old brick. If you have a more modern or nondescript facade, keep the look clean and simple. Paint it black, satin finish, and make sure the railing is primed first.
