Brick Staining

We are about to close on a brick townhouse and the front exterior has a bright, somewhat unusual shade of red brick. We don’t love the color but would want to avoid painting the brick. Does anyone know if it would be possible to stain the brick a different color? We’ve reached out to a few contractors that do this work and at least 1 said that it’s only possible to stain raw brick with light shades but not brick that already has a deep or darker shade. Any thoughts?

OP, I don’t know if this applies to your house, but in the circa 1890-1910 time period, new and unusual colors of brick were popular, including dark, pale, and bright shades of yellow, rust, orange, brown orange, red orange, red brick, and brown, and red brown. Some of the rows near me employ a rainbow of these hues, while other houses are one solid shade. Circa 1900, lighter shades including pale gray and tan started appearing. When we removed the Perma-Stone on the first level of our wood-frame house and stripped the pink-painted brick a few years back, we were surprised to discover bright rust colored brick. I’ve grown to appreciate these rich tones and patterns over time and never fail to admire the brickwork on my walks around the neighborhood.

The house is over a hundred years old. The color is a bit odd and does not seem original (may have been stained in the past). However, you’re right that we may be messing with a good thing. We’ve decided to live with it for a few months and see if we feel differently. Perhaps just painting the trim and cornice, and redoing the stairs may do the trick.

How old might the house be? Is this original or a recently added veneer? If the house is more than 50 years old and and the brick is original, you might be messing with a good thing.

i am going to give you another tip: as we who do the work move between products we know less about and as we might have to run color samples with them, there is some experimentation and waste. a lot of contractors are reluctant to learn something new because they might waste time and money getting where they need to be for one small project (and some people do not see the benefit of doing something they might not get paid for). that’s ok when i run samples in my wood shop with stains that i have gallons of sitting on the shelf, but if the person you are talking to has never used this before, they might have to buy 4 colors of this stuff to play with to get you where you want to be (and we do not yet know how pricey this stuff is). if someone you talk to has not used this product and seems reluctant, see if you can find out why and see if you can make it worth their while to experiment. if that person has less formal training and is less open, you might have to do some of this for them.

if this person has never worked with this before and they can pull this of f, this might be a win-win for both of you. could open all sorts of doors for that person.

this all came from a hands-on manager (my other company is The Tinker’s Wagon and no, i am not putting my name forth to stain bricks).

What i meant by color on one product can look a little diifferent on another product is when we use stains, products of different densities or compositions might produce a color a little off because the stain reacted with each product differently. What i am saying, you probably cannot run to home depot and buy bricks and expect the stain to do the same thing on both. A real experienced person will know this; someone who has not done staining will not realize this. One way to check their experience is to ask them about running color samples and see what they say.

I could also be wrong about this but one way we avoid trouble as we approach new products and processes is to consider what can go wrong. This is coming from a person who stained his first crown molding in 1976 and has since used all manner of stains except stains on brick and concrete. I have stained some brick here and there, but that was not intentional.

OP, i would consider the products that annep mentions. then i would go back to the contractor you liked the most and ask that person if they had ever heard of this product and see what they say. if that person has never heard of it but sounds open and smart and conversant, you might suggest they go investigate the product. (i do a lot of what i do now because customers could not find people to do weird things but they see me on here and ask me to give it a whirl). at the same time, i would call that lime works firm and ask them if they have any contractors here in the city that can work with that product and call that contractor and see what they have to say.

the contractor you spoke to and myself are coming from a place with staining where staining really only tones something. to us, staining always has some translucency to it and to make it look opaque it has to look painted. i am a little concerned that to do what you want with the lime works product might look a little artificial or painted if you go all the way with a color but look at the example they po st, there are variations. they also seem to have a color chart up there, so maybe there is some toning that can be done with opposite colors to change color. Be aware of this, when i was first using stains to change colors it was hit or miss and if you get someone with little experience, you will want them to experiment someplace else and know that color on one product can look very different than color on another of similar color.

i am still a little concerned that to fully change this color with this product might make the bricks look a little painted. also know this, i think they mention phosphorus in their literature and “etching”. i have used phosphorus to clean brick and a stone wall. know this, what is happening is this product is etching the stain into the brick. it will not be sitting on the brick like paint (it will become part of it). i am not sure how deep the etching process will go (i stain wood and can tell you what it takes to sand stain out of wood) but it may be that if you do not like what you get in 3 years, it might (probably) be very hard to remove this without sanding the protective face of the brick off.

Thank you both! The house is not in a Historic District so we are good on that front. We are willing to go darker so that may be our best bet if at all possible. The color is currently just too bright.

admittedly, i have never purposely stained brick. but i stain a lot of things (i am also a restoration contractor). this is the problem with staining anything that is already dark: you can only change the color by going dark or darker. it is possible to work with color theory to change color by say using opposite colors or toning with light colors, but when we do this on dark items, you might get a new color that will be very dark. i can tell you more about color theory but i generally only use blue and green to change wood tones away from orange or red (making them browner). or i add browns simply to darken something that is where i want it. my actual knowledge of this comes from customers who are artists and who have taken the time to teach me. a color wheel might help. if you ask more i will see what i can say. i do have a color wheel here someplace.
