BLOCKING OFF A PARKING SPOT WITH CONES?

Last night I was circling the block trying to find a place to park and I noticed an opening that was blocked off by 3 orange cones, so I got out and moved the cones to the sidewalk and parked. Then this morning when I went to the car a guy came out of the house I was parked in front of and confronted me about being a “bad neighbor” for moving the cones he had placed to save his spot because “it is hard to park around here.” I tried to explain the absurdity of his argument and that parking spots are public property so he has no right to do that. He kept accusing me of not knowing “how it goes around here”. Admittedly I only moved to the block a year and a half ago but I have lived in Brooklyn with a car for 20+ years…..anyway, is there some sort of unspoken rule I am unaware of or is this guy full of it?

here are the trucks MRD is talking about from google street view, and in reality they are much more overflowing now. call me entitled all you want, if I lived on this block I would want something done about it. In all fairness, you weren’t “nice to him”. You moved his cones because you wanted to park, then when he approached you, you two bumped heads. Prior to that you two had no interaction.
Did he actually threaten you? Or did you just feel threatened? There is a difference
Did he literally say he would harm you?

Even your response to MDR about the guy parking with the two trucks full of metal is riddled with entitlement:

“Not sure why you and your neighbors enable that nonsense”

I’m not going to agree with the tone and words RW used, but I can 100% understand why they said what they said. Everything you say has a touch of superiority woven into it. In your defense, you probably don’t even realize it.
All that aside, if you want the problem solved, you can try to be civil towards him.
If you want a bunch of folks to just agree with you….then I guess you came to the right place

I’m not sure how that’s not self explanatory. You posted a question in a forum, and it seems as if any person who doesn’t agree with you gets an aggressive response.
If you can’t grasp the concept of trying to be cordial towards your neighbors I’m not sure what to tell you.
Nobody has stated that your neighbor is right or what he’s doing is legal
We’re simply stating that when you approach people in a nice way, they may listen to you.
Isn’t that the point?
You want him to stop using the cones, do you really think antagonizing him will make him listen to you?
It seems as if all you want is for ppl to jump on the “he’s a jerk, ppl like him suck and I am right” train”.
Not once has anyone stated you were wrong, we literally ALL agree with you.
But if you want an EFFECTIVE approach, try to be nice to your neighbors. You can exercise your right to call 311, but I guarantee you, you’ll be trading 1 set of problems for another.
Will it really kill you to say to him next time you see him “hey I know we got off on the wrong foot, my name is Randy etc etc etc ……”
Then expl ain your issue with the cones.
You’re literally skipping over the easiest way to handle the situation.

I agree – the guy is a jerk and not entitled to hold the spot, but it’s probably best not to make enemies of your neighbors. On my block we have an old-timer who holds two spots in front of his building for his two trucks that are piled high and overflowing with scrap metal, and he basically runs a hoarding operation pretending to be a recycling business, with old air conditioners, tire rims, rusty bicycles, etc. all over the sidewalk. So you should consider yourself lucky, there are worse neighbors.

I had a 4 year old with me, why should I have to park 5 blocks away and you don’t have to?” and then he went into this whole “if a man was here you wouldn’t have moved my cones…” sorta stuff which I took as a threat so I just said I needed to go to work and I drove away.
