BLOCKING OFF A PARKING SPOT WITH CONES?

Last night I was circling the block trying to find a place to park and I noticed an opening that was blocked off by 3 orange cones, so I got out and moved the cones to the sidewalk and parked. Then this morning when I went to the car a guy came out of the house I was parked in front of and confronted me about being a “bad neighbor” for moving the cones he had placed to save his spot because “it is hard to park around here.” I tried to explain the absurdity of his argument and that parking spots are public property so he has no right to do that. He kept accusing me of not knowing “how it goes around here”. Admittedly I only moved to the block a year and a half ago but I have lived in Brooklyn with a car for 20+ years…..anyway, is there some sort of unspoken rule I am unaware of or is this guy full of it?

Ironically, I think Randy and RW are doing the same thing just in opposite ends of the spectrum. They’re both making sweeping assumptions about others based on small tidbits of info.
Maybe we should have them move in next door to one another and see how that plays out!

I dunno, it seems to me that as long as there have been streets in Brooklyn, there have been neighbors doing assinine and unlawful things on them and neighbors resorting to a bit of self help in response. Is it the best response? Debatable. What it isn’t is a sound basis for a proxy argument about gentrification. New neighbors, old neighbors, on the issue raised initially in this thread, it really doesn’t matter.

Let’s also point out that when Randy parked there that night he had no idea why the cones were there, he was just tired of driving around.

I have a con ed access grate in front of my house in the street. Last year they had to come and open it up to fix my electricity access. The night before they were scheduled to come work on it, I blocked off the spot. When my next door neighbor came home he rang my bell and asked me why I did it. I said because con ed was coming super early and they would need to block off parki ng in front of 5 houses.
He said he understood and we went about our lives.
His first reaction wasn’t “let me call 311”
Sometimes it’s just better to confront ppl
