Black cables crisscrossing yards

Does anyone know what these cables are for and if they can be removed? They are crisscrossing every building on our block. I’ve seen these in other yards too. Would love to get rid of the eyesores! Old phone or cable just cut them, minimal voltage if active it’s impossible to get electrocuted. In my experience you are never going to get Verizon or TWC to remove the. Sure they will come out take photos, etc. then do nothing no matter how much time you waste calling them.
A while back on a new restaurant project we had a trunk line feeding an entire block in Chelsea that had been run through a closed up 40′ long skylight at the back of the building. We were replacing the skylight but could not do so until the line was removed. Verizon came through multiple times do their usual BS, take photos etc. and do nothing.
The project manager was frustrated after months and months of nothing being done, I asked him if he would like me to take it over, he said absolutely and set yet another appointment with Verizon. They came, I told them I wanted the line removed immediately they gave me BS excuses as to why the couldn’t so in front of them I told one of my guys to get a sawzall out of the gang box, I explained to them the line was on private property and they had no easement and I was going to solve the problem right now. They said “you can’t do that you will have the whole block filled with Verizon trucks (to restore service)” I said that’s great that’s just what we need to get this done. As my guy was heading up the ladder (they must not thought I was serious) they realized I was and actually begged me to stop. I told them they had 2 days to move it and I gave them a deadline of that Friday noon. It was done before the deadline. Sometimes you just got to put your foot down.
The last time I had this issue (also again in Chelsea) after chasing them for over three months I gave up and just cut the line, they came out relocated the line and restored one or two people that were out of service.

When Verizon was wiring FIOS on our block and in all the back yards, I asked the tech to confirm that 1) they were Ma Bell lines that weren’t in use and 2) that WE could cut them. I knew we weren’t using them, but wanted to make sure that we wouldn’t electrocute ourselves! He confirmed and we cut the lines and it was fine.

Thise are drop lines for cable and phone. Usually piecemeal from repair people at this point. Obviously one trunk to the houses and fan along the rear building facades would be aesthetically preferable, but that requires access and permission every time they need a new drop for your neighbor – not always practical when customer is out of service and neighbors aren’t home. I believe they do it sometimes though – i let them run a cable trunk across my building for a neighbor.

You could probably get rid of the drops to your building if they aren’t being used, i personally wouldn’t touch your neighbors’ though.

Call the Public Service Commission and tell them you want Verizon and your cable company to clean up. Say you’ve contacted the utilities, but they have not responded

I got rid of the ones on my property but it took a lot of calling Verizon and at the time, Time Warner.
Most are abandoned phone lines.

Yeah those are cable and phone lines–you can’t really get rid of them.
