Bird Poop Solution?

Hi all – Would appreciate suggestions on how to deal with persistent bird poop on our brownstone stoop. It seems birds (pigeons?) like to hang out on our cornice and window sills. I’ve read varying suggestions on what is most effective and spoke to an exterminator who wants to put up spikes and a net — and whose charge is a bit eyepopping. Anyone have thoughts and suggested vendors to contact? Thank you!

And after what i just said, no one should consider poisoning pigeons (like we do with rats) because the hawks will eat the poisoned pigeons and die.

If these birds hatch some place, they continue to return. We had a pair of doves that used to sit in a tree behind the house. Every year on the same branch dropping poo on the same spot in my yard or on my car. Then their children return. Last spring they took the tree down and now the doves are walking around on the ground around my cars, confused, like something is missing but they can’t figure out what it is.

We used have pigeons around buildings. We made every effort to eradicate them. I am not saying we could put pigeon spikes up everyplace but when we found their nests we destroyed them. You have to break the cycle and kill an entire generation or members of successive generations to stopped these winged rats from returning to their place of hatch.

I believe i have read that pigeons carry more diseases than rats. But the city in their infinant wisdom makes half baked laws that stop people from feeding pigeons on public property but those laws do not reach to private property; if they find a rat nusance on someone’s private property they come out and issue tickets. People used to come to nyc from pennsy to net the pigeons and take hundreds of them back to pa for live release shotgun tarkets. I thought they were doing us a favor. The city made it illegal to catch them for sporting purposes. If they had four legs they’d be putting poison out where they gather.

Get a hawk. Every block in the city should have a hawk.

if you have a window above the offending area, and can fit some kind of plastic tray or other vessel up there that isnt gaudy with some surface area to it- fill with white vinegar once a week. they prob won’t come back. they hate that smell.

We had spikes installed by Bye Bye Birdie. Their quote was by far the lowest. And the spikes have worked since installation 12 months ago at keeping the pigeons away. Smaller birds like sparrows can still get nests in the spikes (luckily we haven’t had that happen) but it’s pigeons that create the poop problems. Pigeons natural habitat are cliffs so they hang their rear ends over the edge and go to the bathroom. I think other birds have different hygiene habits.

Those spikes I find unattractive as they always are filled with dry leaves that you can’t possibly clean. I’ve seen birds actually nesting in the spikes because it makes it easy to build a nest on.
