Bird netting or chicken wire over air shaft?

The 8’x10′ air shaft in our four-story building needs protection against pigeons. Right now we’re using chicken wire attached to 2×4 beams that rest on the ledge. But this is starting to fall apart. Has anyone used bird netting? If so, how did you secure it to the roof?

Actually, just get an aluminum bar long enough for all 4 sides of the duct, from the hardware store or iron works shop that is thin enough to bend into a rectangle. Drill holes to accept sheet metal galvanized screws (so they don’t rust), maybe 1/2″ long, and sandwich the chicken wire between the two, screwing through the duct. This will be a permanent solution that won’t fall apart. Good luck.

A lot of what you mentioned should shoddy and confusing. 8 feet x 10 feet? Also using 2×4 wood studs is not good. Please send my office a photo via email and we’ll help you resolve this problem, no cost. Chicken wire is the best option to keep birds and rodents out. I’ll sketch or note something on how to make it work permanently for you. Just google search my name to find the email address.
