Best primer and paint for exterior front entry doors?

Its time to repaint our exterior front doors. Anyone have any suggestions for a good exterior grade primer and paint brand/type for this project?

start trying pratt and lambert. The Pratt and Lambert in my opinion (and i have used all sorts of paints that people on here have never heard of) was or is superior to Ben. i have not used Pratt in 20 years.

another paint with a good reputation (i have not tried them on walls but have used their paints and primers in industrial settings) is pittsburgh. but i would not run out and try it just because i said it here.

this ben moore thing. and them buying janovic some years back (i think they have since parted ways). it is, in my opinion, too much about marketing and squeezing out the competition which is bad for all of us. i use ben because i have to and because it is safe and consistent. but if my local supplier had something different, i might try it (they do; something called Californian and it is garbage).

also, these corner pop up ben moore retailers in some areas, the brand new ones. the people running them know NOTHING; they know what the Ben Moore marketing hype tells them. and they know NOTHING about the competition and if the competition has something better for your needs and they do not, they will never tell you about it. they would rather sell you something not suitable and let it fail then send you down the road.

unbeknownst to most people painting (finishing) is a very specific science. the process and application. one misstep and the entire job can fail or will look like poo. every step has to be perfect and that means the correct product.

I hate the paint and primer mixed too. We are painting upstairs inside and I had to make an extra effort to go to Janovic and have them use the old base which does not mix the two together. I would not be surprised if it’s completely unavailable soon. It’s unbelievable really it seems crazy to me.

House by, fully agreed but what makes Fine so special is the application process. Sanding fine and dusting. I often do not tell people about them because most people are not prepared to work on a door like they might a historic car- removing each and every imperfection. Short of that, there is no point and with Fine even a spec of dust looks like a pebble.

so, i am generally a purist. i have finally moved over to some modern finishes for some indoor applications. it will be a very very long time before i use anything with paint and primer mixed. might never happen.

i will use exterior latex when i must (sherwin williams has a low temp latex that can be applied in winter and sherwin is a good product, worth checking out but not my go to).

Great advice above. Benjamin Moore (and no doubt other brands as well) has a new exterior latex paint and primer in one. Stay away. This is just not workable for an exterior wood door application. Your door will be flaking and peeling within months. Scientifically proven by yours truly and a friend who tried it on their respective homes. 🙂

I use ben Moore super spec in oil. I prefer oil as it can be sanded out and recoated better than latex. They will tell you the super spec is for metal; that is the directive from the epa. Works great on wood

Ok, if they are well weathered, ben makes a long oil primer. I think the number is 100. It has a lot of linseed oil in it. If the wood is not dried, ben makes an exterior primer, no 95 or 96, I think. We use those on raw wood. Over old paints and sometimes on raw wood we use zinser cover stain.
