before and after - better or worse?

I walked past this newly renovated house the other day, obviously it is not something you see every day so I looked up the listing and also found the previous listing. what do people think? i am not sure what to make of it, I think maybe the wood/metal siding combo was a better idea on paper than in reality?

I think its okay, definitely an improvement over what was there. Although the neighboring house to the right is old, there are newer buildings across the street so the new design is not completely out of context. I like that there are no air conditioners or big balconies on the front. But I agree the fence is harsh. It matches the house but it would have been much better to use materials and a design that creates a transition to the neighborhood context.

I’m with you, Bob. I hate that sterile look. I just don’t see the appeal, beyond that it looks cool (but not inviting) in pictures.

Don’t get me wrong–if I had to choose I’d much rather live in the newly renovated/remuddled version than a neglected wreck, but–long term–I’d find it depressing to live in such a sterile environment. I’m aware that, even on THIS website, that might be a contrarian view.

Well. it looks they added a floor and significant height. Hate the style, though. And I really hate horizontal fencing, particularly the way it completely walls off the property from the neighborhood. Very unneighborly.

Pretty bad in 1980 as well. A few months ago I was in a beautifully restored Bushwick frame house that had once been as badly re-muddled and neglected as this house. THAT was terrific!

I don’t know. IMO you’re comparing an apparently thoughtless ad hoc remuddling to a carefully thought out (and probably costly) remuddling. Both are pretty bad. I think many people would prefer the newer version although people will say “what could they have been thinking?” when they see it a decade or so later. I wonder what this poor house looked like before it got screwed up?

that is definitely a unique combo going there..I prefer the before even though I’m not a fan of vinyl siding.
