Basement Walls

I have read so much in the Forum on this topic but all embedded in various threads, so looking for a straightforward answer.

I just re-did my basement (yay!) after installing french drains and an updated sump pump. The remaining exposed rock walls (front and one side) are crumbly. I think the last person put something on it that they shouldn’t have. I’ve scraped off a lot of it, and I have read on this forum that it is best to let the walls breathe. And any work should be re-pointing work, not paint. But is there any coating or paint-like thing I can put on it just to make it feel a little lighter and cleaner? That won’t cause damage? I don’t need it to look perfect, just fresh and clean.
