Base of wall separating. Why?

I have recently notice that the back interior wall is separating from the floor at the base. How do I get to repair this.

We had a similar problem (the floor had broken and fallen about three inches along the party wall in the rear) and weren’t sure of the exact cause or if it was still moving. Before proceeding with a renovation of the rear and front facades, our architect suggested we consult an engineer. I was skeptical but it was someone the architect has worked with before, we exposed the ceiling/joists underneath first (in the cellar) so the engineer could see everything, and he was very helpful. One of the joists near the rear of the cellar had fallen out of its pocket. There was something going on with the last joist also, the one that runs under the back wall, and our contractor did something to shore it up, as well as put in some columns and reinforce the joist that had fallen out of its pocket. Quite a relief to have it all taken care of.
