Balustrade Renovation

Hi. I’ve got a flakey and rusty balustrade on my stoop. They are the big, substantial kind. I’m looking to have it stripped and re-painted. Have one quote of $2500 but was hoping to get the forum’s experience. Is that a good price? Anything else to consider? Thanks.

there are two ways to approach this and there has been some writing on here about this in the past couple of weeks.

if you have a nice balustrade (as opposed to the crappy one in front of my 1928 queens house) it might be worth it for you to do the proper job. be aware that surface prep and proper primers are key to producing a finish on iron that will not peel in a few years (rust will keep growing like a cancer; there are primers to slow the spread of it. i had for years done iron work and work on metals using rustoleum rusty metal primer and was pleased. then, at the advice of rustoleam and my local retailer, i switched and ran into trouble on an iron window gate on a door i was working on in the slope.. if you have people who understand all this and are not there just to slap paint on, i say go for it.

the other side of this is, you can scrape and wire wheel the chipping and flaking stuff and leave the good. that is how i do the crappy iron in front of my house every few years and i do use a good primer when i do this and am generally happy. i just ha d a kind of handyman guy scraped and wire brush mine but i have to direct him and i TELL him the products to use. he did a great job on my iron and primed it and he was to return and do the top coat and i have not heard from him since. all i need now is a handyman to put the top coat on and the work is done.

there is something else. keep in mind that in order for a finish to work on metal, the rust must be treated properly. Years ago a shop teacher of mine told me about something i think he called Rust Mort (he is still around, i can email him). a few years back i had an iron corner bowl here that horses drink out of. i was going to make a planter out of it (it is acrually in my shop now and i would sell it if someone wanted it). i coated it with some kind of clear rust mort like product and left it in my back yard fot two winters. the product was made as a primer to go on under paint but two years later is looked just like the day i had applied it. if i knew the name of that product i would post it here, but i cannot recall.

if you want a good job done on your iron, you need people who are willing to apply commercial rust treament products to it. My guess is, some of them do their homework and know the products and will sell you a good job and others will just want to rush through the job and get paid. your job is to ask questions and get the names of products they will be using and have them list those products in the contract. when i worked in property management it was my job to walk around and look at the cans they were working out of and make sure they were unsealing them on site as new, not altered.
