Backyard/garden apt upkeep

Anyone rent out a garden apt? If so who is Responsible for the upkeep of the yard? Is it the tenant, the landlord for based on what’s in the lease agreement? Has anyone had experience with this if so what have you done?

probably hard to define “upkeep of the yard” and enforce it. one person’s upkeep is another person’s unkempt disaster.

My back yard is shared access, but I’ve done all the plantings and mostly keep things in shape (I am not always around so it gets overgrown). The push mower is there for the tenants to use if they want (our grass is more of a suggestion than a reality). What are the concerns that you have? That you will be required to maintain it for tenant, but don’t want to? Or that you want to keep control of the plantings and upkeep? It would seem that either situation could be dealt with by rider to lease or honest conversation.

AFAIK it depends on the lease agreement. My only experience of this was back in the early ’70s, when we rented a ground floor apartment in the South Slope. We had exclusive use of the garden and were happy to assume responsibility for it’s upkeep–we even bought our own lawnmower. I don’t think such an arrangement would work when there’s shared access.
