backyard drainage

We have been gradually seeing water damage at the rear wall in our basement. We have a drain going directly to the ground soil in the backyard. The drain opening is about 5 feet away from the house and covers about 300+ sq ft of concrete floor in the backyard.

We called a couple of contractors and there are different ways to fix this. Most would recommend connecting the backyard drain into the house sewer drain. Then a couple would recommend putting a french drain to a drywell and another to put a pump and route it to the street.

How is everyone handling rainwater in their backyard?

We have two backyard drains: one very close to the house and one (which collects the vast majority of the water) about mid-way between the house and the back fence. Both route into the house drain and work well. The house roof is pitched to the front of the house where gutters carry the water down into the house drain.

I’d connect it to the house drain as well. Pump option sounds rather ridiculous. If a drywell is cheaper then, maybe. As long as the drywell will work with the 100 year 4″ rainfall that seems to occur at least once a year now.

No, this is not the rear gutter drain. My rear gutter is going directly to the house sewer. This is just a drain opening in my backyard which is mostly concrete.

Is this your rear gutter drain pipe? It should be connected to the house sewer drain.
