Backyard Deck Cable Railing System Recommendations
Hi all,
Currently looking for different options for a cable railing system for a deck I’m about to build. I have one option right now, it starts at around $80 per linear foot. Does anyone here have any other systems they can recommend and include their price?

don’t give me a like for something like that. instead, take what i said and go do it. putting that cable rails system up is child’s play. the first time you do it you will have to refigure the cables lengths a couple of times to get the tension right, so don’t cut them too soon. let them sit a day or two, make sure it is all correct and bingo. you do this once it will take you twice as long as a pro. the second time you do this, you will be the pro. seriously.
if i was so inclined i can weld the brackets together for these. it would be a struggle at first but after a half dozen it would move.

Multiple companies have quoted me 8k at this point, from the costs of the posts, hardware, tools, and labor, i’m almost content with paying 8k for a company to do the work of picking out every single piece of item that I need and shipping it straight to the project.
About 20 posts spanning 44 linear feet.

ok, so i just read that exterior must conform to the 4″ rule. but i am not doing a job where this is required so i am not digging further. i read it in passing. i would check. i used to build stair balustrades and as a contractor, i was very careful with these for fear that even years later a kid would get hurt and i would hear from someone’s attorney.
jimmy, if you are newer at this business understand that you have to protect yourself at all angles. everything, even a simple board left on the sidewalk can become a million dollar injury and once the insurance companies and their lawyers get involved, they will be looking at every angle to get every nickel they can and everyone will go after anyone who was within 500 feet of the incident. i flat out refuse to do work that can lead to injury or death. also, where children can get hurt, be very careful. not only would we look careless if a child gets hurt but we will look malicious.

nothing to add that has t been said except make sure those are up to code since they will be visible by inspectors in the backyards. IIRC many cities do not allow horizontal because children can easily climb up them, but i cannot recall if NYC allows this or not.

As GreenThinker mentioned – stairsupplies.com is a good resource. I have an apartment in the city and I used their system to install posts, stainless steel cable and an oak handrail. It spanned a large staircase and a landing. It’s a very DIY friendly process and stair supplies will sell –> buyback some of the specialty installation tools. If I had to do it again, I would have bought the handrails locally. That was probably the most expensive item in the kit.

I looked at this earlier. The posts can be had cheap. Cable is nothing. Drilling the posts will be a hassle but set it up production style with a drill press and you will move through. If you are building the deck yourself, you can do this.
Btw, steel posts and brackets are pricey. If you can do aluminum, great.

Seems like someone is trying to get rich off you. All these items from the aluminum (powder coated or anodized) to the cables/hardware can be easily obtained from online sources. Go to stairsupplies . com and go on the cable railing section. As for installation, anyone thats competent enough with a power drill can screw in the posts and pull the cables through.

Hey guys, so the price went up to around $120 per linear foot. Attached is a reference photo. It’s actually spec’d for the Atlantics Spectrum Rail System. The quote was 9k…
The goal is to have aluminum posts (fascia mounted) with a cedar hand rail + steel cables. [Capture](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:y5XV:capture.png.jpg)

jimmy, in addition to amazon which seems to have everything, try mcmaster carr. i doubt mcmaster has actual kits, but they might have component parts.

We just did our deck railing last summer with cable railing nowhere near that number using stuff we purchased from Amazon including the tools needed. Super easy DIY install for standard brownstone sized deck was less than $40 per linear foot.

I think i saw that stuff at dykes one time. It did not seem like it should cost 80 a linear. Why not post what you are looking at here and maybe someone can suggest something better suited.
If i were doing this at my house, i would probably see if i could source the component parts from commercial vendors or even the maritime trade or discount maritime catalogs and put it together that way. Only a guess. I know the cable is available all over as i see it in marine supply stores outside of the city when i buy varnish and epoxies.
