backyard cat

y’all. We have a backyard surrounded by the rowhouses in Brooklyn. There is a cat walking throughout the backyard every day. My daughter started playing with the cat, then feed it. Now the cat is spending a bit too much time in our backyard and walking into the house once in a while. weird. or maybe not. When I visited my grandma’s farm, they always had a cat living outside but fed by the grandma. Maybe it was taken inside in winter or something.
The cat does not have a collar or any other identifier. We can post “fond cat messages around” to confirm that no one is looking for him.
Anyway, what could be the next step? I do not want to make that a “house cat” living indoors only. I am ok, to take care of it in terms of food and shots, etc. In return, I expect him to intimidate daylights out of the mice around. Also, my daughter would be really happy to play with it here and there.
Is this an acceptable approach?

Letting your pet cat roam backyards is inviting someone else to take it or kill it. I’ve had trouble with a neighbor’s cat coming into our garden and absolutely destroying a plant I’d been growing for years (saw it happen) and our dog who has a dog door almost caught (and would have killed) it a couple of times. There was a rash of outdoor cats near us being poisoned a few years ago, presumably by someone tired of them shitting in their yard. II would never condone this, but want to warn that does happen. If I let my dog roam into other poeple’s yards there would be hell to pay, so why do we let cats do it? (Not a cat hater, I foster them almost constantly.)

Just flagging that there has been a severe uptick in friendly cats dumped in the city during the pandemic — likely by people moving / unable to care for them etc… Scanning the cat for a microchip or attaching a collar with a note is a great idea to make sure that it doesn’t have an owner nearby though.

see what resident2 says. when i was in college i adopted a stray and later learned the “stray” had a home around the block.

Cats are opportunists and their loyalty runs as deep as the fur on their noses. so long as you are feeding that cat better food than its former or rightful owner or the neighbors, he will hang around. switch to something he does not like and he will move on.

Wait a minute: you are all seeming to assume that the cat does not already belong to one of the neighbors! Many cats in Brownstone areas go wondering around the gardens & go home again.
If you want to find out if it does belong to someone; put up flyers all around the whole block, any building that backs onto the back yards, or attach a collar with a message attached asking for any owner to get in touch, of course giving your phone/email etc.

BAA doesn’t TNR friendly cats – if it’s a friendly cat my strong recommendation would be to vet it and keep it inside — or, if you’re able, to temp foster while a rescue works on finding them a home. Outdoor cats in Brooklyn live short lives and run the risk of getting hit by cars, poisoned, getting into fights with Raccoons. If it’s feral – that’s another story, although if it were you wouldn’t be able to handle it at all.

We do not let the feral cats inside, but only because we already have an indoor cat. The vet told us to keep them apart because the ferals may carry communicable diseases and fleas. If you don’t have any pets and the cat seems gentle, I’d go for it but you might want to consider flea treatment first.

Check to see if it is eartipped – when feral cats are trapped and neutered, the vet removes the tip of one ear to indicate that the cat has been neutered so it won’t be trapped again once it is released. My ferals have all been neutered, do a great job catching rodents and have winter homes outside for cold temperatures. I’d say get it neutered at the very least and provide a shelter in winter.

If you are feeding the cat and your daughter is enjoying its company, adopt cat into your family!! That would entail carving out a space for the litterbox , so, it could be warm in the brutal winter months!!!
