average size of floor bays in a traditional brownstone?

Hi neighbors,

Can anyone tell me how far spread apart are the beams underneath floors in a traditional brownstone? And what are the average dimensions of the cavities bounded by the floor, ceiling below the floor, and beams? (I believe this space is called a bay, but perhaps that is incorrect.) I assume the bays/cavities travel the width of the house (i.e. 20 feet).

Hope my question makes sense. I may need to do some drilling into the floors and don’t want to hit one of those beams accidentally.
