Asbestos Abatement of Roof

A small amount of asbestos was found in the tar of our 35×20′ roof (three story townhouse). What’s a reasonable estimated cost to have this abated? Any suggestions for licensed abatement companies? We’re at the early stages of a gut renovation and no one is living in the building. It feels a bit like a Catch-22. We will not be able to rebuild the roof until DOB Alt 1 permits are back. But we need to file the ACP 5 before we get the permits. We’d welcome suggestions about how to cover and protect the building once the abatement happens and before permits come through. Anyone with a similar story? How did you handle it?

We have used JME Environmental Corp ( Amando 917 868-8980 ) on several projects
They are great at signing off all the paperwork and necessary permits and also provide air monitoring which is required by EPA.
During the abatement process you can hire a contractor to follow up behind the asbestos removal and install a new roof and flashing. You do not need a permit to install a new roofing system but it is important to have all your ducks in a row because often after the old roofing is removed if there was previous leaking the sheathing / decking below the old roof could be rotted and would need immediate replacement. Also after the perimeter flashing is removed there may be a need for masonry pointing on the exposed brickwork. Figure out what roofing system you would like to use before the abatement begins and also if you are going to insulate the roof with polyiso that way everything should run smoothly and minimize water infiltration during old roofing removal
With proper planning and coordination the project should run smoothly

We abated the facade of our house at roughly the same size and I believe it was $12k not including the inspection. We also got a quote for the roof (21’x32′) and I believe that was another 14k including a temporary roof. We tried to hire Leinster Contracting but at the last minute (literally the day they were supposed to come) they “remembered” that they didn’t have the necessary permissions to also do air monitoring, which was a requirement given the size of our building (so be prepared for that.) Not recommended.
