artificial turf

I just got a quote to cover a 12′ x 15′ area of my garden in artificial turf – $8700. seems crazy high to me, even by brownstone brooklyn shakedown standards. anyone else had this sort of thing done and care to share how much it cost?

Randolph, sorry I was MIA. At SynLawn, I worked mostly with Patrick and Anastasia—I got the sense that Anastasia was the one who really got #%^* done around the office. Once I got their attention, they were great, but getting to that point was the challenge. Here’s what made a difference: I told them I was working on this job and had multiple bids, but really liked the feel of SYNLawn and wanted to include them. I told them I was hoping to choose within a week or two, but that once I had a contractor, I wasn’t too picky about delivery date. I just needed to get someone locked in. I sense this last part is key—folks like you and I are super small jobs for them. So if you’re genuinely flexible with install dates, let them know and you may get more attention if they know they can slot you in for an odd day on their calendar. Yours will def be a one day job.

Hey Randolph, may have some helpful information for you. I also responded to a previous post on this topic back in March. We undertook this project in spring 2017 and think its a great DIY project. Here are the steps we took:

1. Demo’d the concrete in the backyard
2. We leveled the yard
3. Installed a weed barrier
4. Put down 2″ of 0.5-cu ft drainage rock
5. Used a tamper to solidify the rock
6. Installed UltraLush Platinum artificial grass
7. Finished with all purpose sand over the grass

The artificial grass is amazing, very soft and thick, the kids love it and it is so easy to maintain.

Total cost was just under $2,000, all materials purchased from Lowe’s. My backyard is 17’ x 43’ but layed the artificial grass in a 13’ x 21’ section.

Yeah, that’s crazy. I just had a 10×24 chunk of SynLawn slapped down in my backyard for $4400, fully installed. Turf was about half the cost, installation and delivery was the rest. You should be looking at less than that, not only because your sqft is less, but also because turf is usually made on a 15′ wide roll, which means a plot like yours will have zero overage. FWIW, my experience of SynLawn was that they were almost impossible to get ahold of and corral for quotes and date of delivery–really had to stay on them. But they do good work and I couldn’t be more pleased with the product. Their office is just a little overwhelmed–but I’d use them again.
