Are UL lights required by DOB?

My electrician is saying that to pass the electrical inspection all our lights need to have the UL stamp on them and other marking such as ETL are not good enough. Is this true? In a search in the archives here someone posted that this is only true for new construction.

Unfortunately I’ve already purchased some lamps from Amazon and they are not UL stamped although the description said they were UL… guess I may have to return.

Work something out with the electrician. It doesn’t take long to swap out the porcelain sockets. It would take me about 10 minutes to install a procelain socket, and a pro could probably do it in less than half that time. I’m assuming this is a bigger job and he’s made enough money to help you out here.

Right, i just don’t want to fail the inspection and be charged twice by the electrician for installing the porcelain lights and then the real ones.

The ETL mark is acceptable. You are not required to use products tested by UL only. I imagine the inspector would know this, but if they don’t, rather than fight it, you could just swap in some 2 dollar “UL” porcelain sockets and close the permit, then later put in your perfectly legal ETL fixtures. You could also just tell the electrician to do this for you if he’s worried about it.
