Are IKEA sinks/vanities to NY code?

We are planning on having IKEA sinks and vanities in 2 of our bathrooms… The sinks come with PVC traps that fit nicely into the vanities, however I just saw on an online forum that PVC pipes/traps are not to code in NYC. So I guess we can’t use them??

Seems insane that IKEA would be selling stuff that is not to code.

Anyone have any experience/advice?

I believe the code has changed in the last five years. Just ask your licensed plumber. If you are doing this work as part of a larger Alt-1 or Alt-2 renovation, the city may need to inspect and sign off in which case it could be an issue. If you’re just replacing a sink, it’s probably not a big concern.

I vaguely recall hearing that PVC for drains was disallowed in one- and two-family homes in NYC a few years ago — might have been about 2015 or so. (Of course anything you already have is grandfathered in.)

Also found this article from 2003 that says plastic pipe is OK in up to 2 family homes… Wondering if this is still the case?

It may or may not be up to code but in the past almost everyone I know has utilized either ikea traps or pvc traps, including us.

If the potential for a minor code violation will keep you up at night, dig deeper to find out for sure and act accordingly. Otherwise I wouldn’t worry. My only issue is that I generally don’t like pvc anything for most plumbing bc of the noise.
