appliance installation question

Aside from something like a Subzero which requires a certified installer, who usually installs appliances – contractor or person who delivers? Both are saying it isn’t them for a heavy double oven. A different supplier said he would have installed if we had purchased the oven through him instead of who we dealt with (AJ Madison). Related, as a heads up I’m having a horrendous experience with AJ Madison in case anyone is trying to make a decision about where to buy appliances.

The plumber sub contractor installed all our appliances, which incidentally I bought at AJ Madison and had no issues and gave the best prices.
They also replaced a broken oven door without any hassles, but this was 8 years ago.

Agree I do not understand the contractor’s resistance. In both a new home build and my apartment renovation, the appliance install was a line item on the overall bid, and was done by the GC or its subs.

This is an interesting topic given the recent law changes regarding Gas Code. I have met with representatives from HomeDepot, Lowes, Costco and the other Big Box stores; NYC is screwing up their services big time since they cannot install Gas appliances!

It’s electric and 400 pounds apparently. Live and learn with AJ Madison I guess. Very disappointing. We bought all of the appliances there.

If you have a contractor on site; why is he being such a dick? If it is not in the contract just ask; how much? You do not want delivery people installing appliances ever!

FWIW, we have purchased all our appliances from J&R on 7th Ave in Park Slope. They usually beat other local retailers’ prices and are very easy to deal with. Decent guys. I have been recommending them here for years.

Like the OP I also had a horrible experience with AJ Madison. Luckily I was attempting to purchase a gas range in person, at their showroom, and had enough sense to walk out.

I’m assuming a double oven is a wall oven, and from personal experience looking for a gas wall oven, they are few and far between. I’d assume unless contradicted by OP that this is an electric oven.

OP, is my assumption that your double oven is electric correct?

right, it used to be said that anyone could touch a gas line after the shut off valve coming out of the wall (the line to the appliance). but i recently heard that even that has to be done by a licensed person – all since a couple of building exploded.

Anything that involves gas has to be done by a certified plumber – places like HD say they install but that doesn’t apply in NYC. While you have the plumber for that, get him to also do the ice maker & any other peripherals.
