Appliance Advice Needed

I’m renovating the galley kitchen in my pre-war apartment. I need to buy a new fridge, gas range and microwave. Does anyone have any experience with LG appliances? With Kitchen Aid?

I recently owned Fridigaire Gallery appliances. (They were supplied by the condo developer.) The microwave crapped out after five years and the refrigerator needed repairs several times over a 10 year period. The range was fine.

Any thoughts on which way to go?

Btw, the goal isn’t to create a showcase gourmet kitchen.

The only dish washer I like is Bosch as for the stove I own a samsung I paid around 700.00 for and I am happy.

I’d avoid samsung. They often make good things, but if things do go wrong it’s generally a labor to deal with them. That said, we’ve been happy with samsung fridge, but had mid-range dishwasher need pump replacement in less than a year, and it wasn’t a pain, but a friend who got a range that leaks gas (!!!) has been unable to get samsung to sort it out (one repairman came and left without coming inside because he couldn’t find parking close enough in manhattan….)and so hasn’t been able to cook for a month. The only solution Samsung can think of is to return the range to Home Depot and buy another.

Origins of the company notwithstanding , LG makes some very good appliances these days. It is a Korean company and much like Samsung and Hyundai, product quality in the past decade or so is vastly improved.

LG is quite a rebranding outfit. It is the combination of two former bargain basement brands, “Lucky” (that’s the L) and Gold Star. Years and years ago, both made things like black and white TVs with 12″ screens that you could by for $69, little cheapo fridges for dorm rooms etc. Not saying this is any reflection on the LG brand quality now, one way or the other, but the brand name makes laugh because I know its origin.

I have no advise about refrigerators–The Amana we bought several years ago is quite good, but I think this brand may have since become the lower end label for Maytag/Whirlpool. HOWEVER, we spent YEARS agonizing about a gas range to replace the rusting-out Caloric we bought in 1974 (I think the early ’70s was the low point for American appliance quality). We had a 36″ space and very few “regular” stoves are made in this size these days, none of which my wife liked. We vacillated between the obscenely expensive restaurant style ranges (Wolf, Thermador, Viking, etc). and an equally costly refurbished late ’40s–early ’50s range (most of which have to be shipped cross-country from California). We thought we had a perfect compromise with a Big Chill range; a mid-Century style on a Blue Star chassis. That was before my wife looked closely at these ranges and Restaurant-style ranges and decided that the ovens were all too close to the floor for her.

We ended up with a 30″ GE range, realizing that:
1. We had enjoyed using electronic oven controls in vacation rental houses
2. We could have a cabinet made to fill in the empty 6″ space left by the smaller range
3. Even if the electronics (which we initially didn’t want) weren’t durable we could replace them, or indeed an entire $1,000 “regular” stove, quite a few times, if need be, and still be ahead, compared to the $8–9,000 ranges we had been considering . We chose the GE in part because Consumer Reports highly rated the reliability of that brand, but mainly because my wife had grown to dislike stainless steel appliances and that brand’s proprietary “slate” color went well with our SS fridge and dishwasher.

FWIW the GE range has worked out well, but I think any brand highly-rated by CR would be as good.

I bought a Kenmore Elite four years ago. Sad to say it completely died two weeks ago. The repairwoman said the whole compressor was shot. When I asked if this was common in such a new refrigerator, she said unfortunately with LG (and Kenmore, which is made by GE) it’s very common. Very disappointing and I will not be buying LG or Kenmore in the future.

I don’t think there is a one-size fits all solution here. Some LG appliances are great, others are not. I have an LG Washer and Dryer and am very happy. I have no experience with their kitchen appliances. Searching around on the internet for review sites should help you determine which appliances are good and which are not. To Bob’s point, you do not need all appliances to be the same brand. LG may make the perfect refrigerator for you, but another company makes the stove that best fits your needs.

Consumer Reports is your friend, especially their reliability ratings. No need for all appliances to be the same brand.
