Anyone have Mitsubishi Hyper Heat?

A contractor is proposing replacing our old radiator steam heating with this new system. Anyone have experience with it?

$200 per month for whole house cooling would be great. My a/c bills in the summer for just my apt. (2,600 sq ft triplex, central air with two compressors) can be a serious multiple of that….and my rather aged natural gas furnace/zoned hot water baseboard heat (servicing the entire bldg: 3 family, 5 floors in total) can be $700 on a cold month. (But my tenants seem to like 80F apartments….) Definitely something to consider as part of a major reno. Thanks for the info.

We have a 4-story, 300 sq ft 2-fam wood frame with old fashioned one-pipe steam and a gas boiler (not to mention a draft here and there). We don’t end up paying more than $200/mo for heat. Maybe for one or two months when it is really cold.

Yes it is, don’t know yet. The system was installed in November 2016. Will have data starting next month. However, my understanding is the cooling component is more energy efficient that the heating component. I am expecting less than $200/month.

Sorry, it’s cheaper than oil or natural gas. The cost of the electric to run 2 exterior condensers and 8 interior air handlers for a 3,000 sq ft house is about $200/month, far cheaper than natural gas.

FirstSlope, If the new system is so much more expensive to run, why do you prefer it? Personally, I love the steady quality of heat from HW radiators but am not a fan of forced hot air. Yet isn’t your new system very similar (not in terms of the technology, of course) —
at least in terms of blowing hot air as the heat source?

We removed the natural gas force hot air furnace and replaced with the ducted XLTH system. This past winter the XLTH was incredible, it kept the house comfortable all winter with no issues. In terms of costs, during the winter my bills were probably $200-$250 higher per month– but I use the ‘set it and forget it’ approach. For context, I installed 2 exterior Fujitsu 36k BTU (i.e. 3 ton) condensers (AOU36RLXFZH) and 8 interior ducted air handlers (2 per floor).

just5581 and FirstSlope:: What has the operating cost been like? How does the heating bill compare to, say, natural gas furnace/hot water baseboards? Did you get rid of your old hot water or steam system and replace it with Hyper Heat or XLTH or use is as a supplement/back-up? I’ve read where the heat pump wasn’t up to Northeast Winters, but that the newer units are effective down to -13F. Not that we’ve had -13F weather, but has the heat been adequate?
