Anyone done a roof addition?

Hey everyone,
Was wondering if any of you have added another floor? What was your experience, the cost?
I’d be doing this on an already gut-renovated 3-floor rowhouse, so hopefully that’d bring costs down because mechanicals and structural stuff would be pretty up to date. Still, I don’t imagine it comes cheap lol. I’ve found a few good examples of brownstone roof additions online, but they’re harder to come by than I thought!

This is a major project for the reasons identified above. IF you have the FAR available AND you’re not in Landmarks district, the required infrastructural upgrades will still be very substantial. Best to do this at the time of a gut reno if at all possible. Be prepared for sticker shock.

I haven’t done one myself as it seemed like such a complicated project. I just wanted to extend my roofline to add more internal space. Dismantling and reassembling the brick work was going to be very expensive, and the roof extension itself was well out of our budget. However, I need to get a few more quotes as I know several people who have done it with no trouble. Consents in my area are also hugely expensive. Would love to hear your experience if you decide to go ahead with it.

Do you have the FAR available based on your zoning? I would verify that first.
