Annual Steam Boiler Service

I’m relatively new to Brownstone home ownership and we’ve inherited an old steam system. As part of a renovation, we’ve both added radiators and subtracted radiators. All has been running well, so no complaints thus far.

It’s now summer and just wondering if we need to get somebody in for a tune up before the start of cooler weather. The only steps i’ve taken thus far are to turn off the thermostat. I’ve not turned off the system itself.

I’ve done a little research and it seems like I should just leave it on and then maybe get an annual maintenance contract. Some of the recommendations on this board are Gateway and B&D Heating. I’ve heard strong advice to not use NationalGrid.

Can anyone either validate this or suggest something different?

Whoops I hit send too soon. I just need to plug Aurora Plumbing and Heating (718) 235-4091. Carlo the master plumber, is extremely responsive. Aurora replaced our boiler before New Year’s Eve (!!) at a reasonable price and since then, if I have a question about permits or certificates, he responds immediately. He runs a tight ship and communicates well. I recommend him wholeheartedly. GL!

You have gas, right? If you have oil, often the co that supplies the oil does the annual service.

A Real Good Plumber is my favorite for technical steam boiler work. Very knowledgeable and responsive. I’ve had too much experience with other plumbers doing absolutely wrong things to steam systems
