An old murder bad for resale value?

Hello, I recently made a bid on a house on Hancock Street. In googling the house, I discovered that it is the location of a grisly murder from 1898 that was allegedly committed by a giantess (!) who was the first woman executed in the electric chair by NY state http://www.brownstonedetectives.com/an-electric-chair-for-hancock-streets-murderess/.
I mentioned it to several friends who were convinced that the house’s resale value would be greatly diminished if anyone discovered the story, which appears to be more or less true. I doubt that the resale would be affected, but I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the matter. Thanks!

This can work both ways.

Gov. Hugh Carey sold his PPW home to Pete Hamill when he moved the family to the Governor’s Mansion in Albany in 1975. When he finished his eight years there he called Hamill to inquire about buying the old place back. Hamill replied the price had gone up appreciably. There was someone important living there now.

Let me start out by saying that I don’t think a murder from over 100 years ago should impact the sale of a Brooklyn row house. IF you seek the advice of a real estate professional when you are looking to sell, only speak to someone who will not be involved with the sale. If you speak to your sellers agent about it, they will be obligated to disclose that to all potential buyers. If the buyers discover the history of the house afterward and find out that the sellers agent knew and didn’t say anything, they are open to liability.

All the have comments are valid points from different perspectives. Professional real estate agents may provide some insight, but could have their own agendas too. Remember you will be living in the house for a while, so the vibe you feel while in the house is very important as well. As I understand it, spirits from natural death impart very different energies from that emanated by those died of horrific murders. Again, your gut feeling is important too.

Your friends are foolish and are not professionals in this area. Invite a real estate agent to give your home a walk-through and tell them a bit about it’s history and ask for a valuation. Unless it was a Jonestown type mass murder or the Manson family compound, I think a professional will put your fears into perspective and you move forward or not based on that advice and your own squeamishness.

All old houses have ghosts. Not just from murders. But from all the lives that have occupied them. The celebrations, the tragedies. Most stories will go forever unknown. But that is part of the charm of owning an old house imo!

Could be potentially haunted, but some people don’t mind living with invisible friends. lots of people, for course, would discount the fact that ghosts even exist, and call the notion of it superstitious, which is a safe thing to say (to not to be ridiculed). I believe there are times when it’s not superstition. It’d be a very personal choice. But if one day I do decide to trade my house for something else, I will not buy a house with a muderous history.

Recent murders could see 30% discount. over 100y old, maybe turn off a few highly superstitious but not many.
