Alphonse Valarosa had done repointing and steps for me just before covid. The st

eps have started to crumble. He kept promising to repair but never did. He finally responded to me today saying his younger brother Vincent Jr. passed away and the company is currently shut down. I,m wondering if anyone has had problems with Valarosa. Condolences to the family.

if this is a smaller brick stoop, they are very hard to repoint with success. what seems to happen is the bricks begin shift and water gets in and this weakens the entire stoop. repointing is not enough to fix something like this once it gets to this point. we often see people taking them down all the way and rebuilding them. we have had bricks reset and repointing done on ours 3 times in 16 years, the last time 2 or 3 years ago and guess what, it is time to do them again. one time i had a union mason actually remove several courses of brick and it still fell apart.

Someone once told me when doing the steps that the bricks have to be soaking wet before they can be reset because they are so dry that they draw the moisture out of the mortar causing it to fail prematurely.

in so far as that company, i have never seen them mentioned here so am not sure what to say.

if you post a picture of your brick stoop, i can tell you if it is similar to what i have and if it looks like something that must come down. that is the next step for ours.
