AirBnB

We live in a 10-unit co-op in which two units are vacant. The owner of one lives abroad. The owner of the other lives primarily on the west coast and returns a few times a year for a week or so. That owner sometimes has friends staying inthe apartment for a week or two at a time and they inform the co-op ahead of time. It’s hard not to suspect that this owner is AirBnb-ing the apartment even though our co-op prohibits that. But it’s not often enough to disturb anyone and it doesn’t appear to affect the building. Some folks, though, aren’t thrilled with the situation. Any thoughts on whether to intervene or just leave it alone?

Based on what you’ve said, I strongly doubt your neighbor is using Airbnb. If they come for a week or so here and there, they don’t need Airbnb money.

If they are in fact using airbnb you should be able to look it up online, either through the airbnb site or whatever service you suspect them of using. Then you would know for sure.

It can affect your building’s insurance covenants. You would probably need an insurance rider to cover non-owners and paying guests.

Why bother if it isn’t a problem and isn’t affecting the building?
