Advice on backyard chickens

Hi all,

Any Brooklyn chicken owners have a recommendation for a good hatchery nearish-by (NY, PA, NJ, CT) that sells/delivers six-week-old chicks? My husband and I are currently building a chicken coop in our backyard, but can’t find a good source for the actual chicks. Most of the online places only seem to offer day-old birds, but we’d like to get them a little older. Only looking for two or three birds.

Thanks!

the place i reference in baiting hollow may actually be east of baiting hollow. as i drove by this past weekend, i made note of a nearby address 5120 Sound ave. it is just east of what had always been “wergert’s grocery” but what i now think is sound avenue grocery.

nyc-sport mentions riverhead. on the north road (sound avenue really) in baiting hollow there is a sign on the road for poultry. not sure of the age of the birds. all of the real commercial farms are gone from out east and what is there now is becoming more of a novelty, for the most part. when i was growing up in the ’70’s we used to buy chickens at Raliegh Poultry Farm on Indian Head Rd in Kings Park. I was back by there a year or so ago and was happy to see they are still in business. their specialty would be prime laying hens or those about to enter laying; i think the term was “pullets” for young layers. we used to get a lot of Rhode Island Reds from them.

The Agway in Riverhead (Talmage Farms) sells chicks. Can’t say I have ever bought one. I suspect that the many poultry farms on the north fork also do.

Try NextDoor. I know there are people in the area who keep chickens & post about them on there who would be happy to help you.
