Adding an iron gate to your front entrance.

Hello Brownstoners,

We are purchasing a home in Bushwick. It’s been modernized, resulting in a beautiful open floor plan but highly lacking in security. All the older homes on the block have iron bars on the windows and iron/steel gates on their door. The area has changed a lot over the years, but I don’t think it’s as safe as we’d like to believe. My question is this:

What are others doing to heighten their security around the entrances to their homes? Iron gates?

Are there any good iron/steel fabricators you can recommend that have a familiarity with modern design? The old school iron gates are not an option. Plenty of great ideas on Pintrest coming from Australia and Germany. Not many pleasing options in Brooklyn.

Are folks using any of the new online security companies? ADP used to be a only company out there. Now there are a slew of “disruptors” in the field. Such as, Nest Secure, Vivint Smart Home, GetSafe Home Security)

After my house was robbed, the police officer said the best deterrent would be a dog. He said some went as far to cut the vocal cords of the dog so the thief won’t hear him coming. I was shocked.

With a lot of the flips on the market, there’s a trend to remove bars and iron door gates. It makes for a lovely open spacious feel but detracts from the overall sense of security the home once had. Not looking to iron bar every opening, but something tasteful on the front door would be nice. Found a place called Piscopo Iron Works that does amazing work.

Local community cop told me that automatic lights in the house & perimeter lighting were most important. Cameras don’t seem to’ve deterred theft on my block.

We put our old girl down a few years back, a pitbull. She’s was amazing. Haven’t had the courage to get another dog since then. We’ve decided once we move we’re getting another one. Right there with ya @resident2.

Indeed, resident2 — people are watching you and talking about you to other neighbors.

I would agree on a dog — go to NYC ACC and adopt a dog that looks tough and barks at doorbell and strange noise (like our sweet Pit that we’ve had for ten years now) but who in the end would do nothing but lick the faces of anyone entering the house. Of course, only if you’re willing to put in time and love that one requires.

No one listens when you say he’s nice. No one.

I lived in Brooklyn from the late 1970’s through to just recently; for whatever reason there is always a certain element that think because you are a landlord/business owner etc that you keep cash in the house.. NEVER!
So over those years I have had bars, they cut them, spend hours digging them out from the back windows etc… I have had alarm systems, they do not work when needed and when they do the Police show up way too late.
The only time I have felt safe and had no attempts or actual break ins is when I have had a large dog: a Rottweiler works well.

Definitely would recommend some type of video surveillance system. Have it set for motion detection and send alerts/email out. Best if you have the video backup to the internet if you can instead of local. You can also look into the doorbell video system. I havent use it yet but Ring has this pretty neat floodlight video sensor. Good Luck

Oh we also did Skybell bc it was better than Ring back then but now everything has changed.

We love Skybell for so many reasons. Just figure out what system works best with the doorbell system you have now (wired doorbell or wireless).

It’s come in handy so many times it’s silly.

Cameras. We went thru tons of pain doing wired install + NVR ourselves several years ago bc the wireless cameras stunk back then but now the wireless cameras are so good we will def be getting them for any home we purchase in the future.

Cameras + garden variety security system = good enough for us.

My sister lives in very fancy nabe and cops were stunned she did not have cameras – told her that every home should have them.

yeah it was bad, they tried to steal the range and in the process ripped the entire gas pipe out of the wall and ran away with it spewing gas for hours. luckily the house did not blow up.

Put in a really bright light with a motion sensor. your neighbor may not like it but it will keep people from lingering in front of your building. Also put in a security system. A gate can work but locks can be picked or cut, when we were renovating we got robbed when someone used a hydraulic bolt cutter to get through a very heavy duty security gate.
