$8 per sq ft for skilled tile guy?

Does this sound fair? We used our tile guy for the bathroom- which was fine given it was small. We now want to do the basement floor- and it would be a 10k (gulp!) project. This does not include materials.

Well I just want to know if there is promotion of unlicensed contractors here because I’m on the site and I advertise and I’m told that I need to be licensed in order to advertise here so if other people are not licensed, I don’t think they should be promoted. And there should not be any of that promotion in the forum as well. don’t know if that person is licensed or not but for that price I don’t know what they’re paying. I think only licensed professional should be promoted here.

so in nyc it is by the dollar amount of the job and it is everything but painting. HIC’s are licensed by DOCA and GC’s and trades like plumb & electric by DOB. they do not require insurance for HIC’s but we are required to have a completion bond.

if a contractor is not licensed they are still a contractor. think of it as an unlicensed operator of a vehicle. they are still an operator, just not licensed.

not sure what is being promoted here. people have to understand that contractors who manage to stay hidden are more likely to commit abuses of workers and other transgressions in general.

I’m not sure I understand your comment, a subcontractor needs to have a license and insurance as well, wether a one-person or not, and if I choose to do tiling that does not make me a subcontractor. A buisness is ran with the proper qualifications, and then why am I licensed and pay insurance and even pay for advertisement on here, because if I was not licensed I would not be able to advertise on here….. right? So are you telling me you’re promotting unlicensed people on Here? Please clarify.

a tile person can be a contractor or sub contractor. i can be that working on doors. if the tile person is hired by the home owner, they are a contractor. if they are hired by another contractor they are a sub. i work alone but i am usually a contractor hired by a home owner.

those of us working alone are still contractor’s. we just may not be GC’s.

it is really determined by the definitions of the law which i am not going to look up now.

@lcrivolitorino: you are kidding right? you are talking about licenses and a court of law; what is legal. do you think that in an age when people march up the capital steps to try to overturn an election, people care about the law? let me see if i can appeal to another side of op.

OP, it sounds like the price is artificially low. i am not sure what this number means because i am not a tile person myself but people who undercut legitimate businesses as lcrivolitor seems to suggest is happening here only hurt the consumer. they drive legitimate businesses from the market and the consumer ends up with hacks who have no training and lack professional responsibility and with these folks sometimes you get lucky sometimes you do not. there are plenty of people who come on this board after hiring the lowest bidder and complain because the guy could not get through the job. there is a reason for that, the lowest bid is often faulty.

op, see what lcrivolitorino is saying. if you are like i am and believe in the law and understand that the law is there to protect all of us from something bad (all of us, the consumer and the workers), ask to see that person’s DOCA license. that is a start. also consider this and i work in this (i am also a contractor): a lot of these unlicensed contractors abuse their workers. they pay them as if we are living at the start of the industrial revolution with low pay (some of these contractors pay human beings $20 an hour with none of the benefits of the modern worker movement; they label them as “contractors” and pay them off the books with nothing in the way of worker’s comp, a 40 hour week, overtime, sick days; it is sub human – there is no way anyone can survive on that in NYC anyway but factor in medical care or retirement, and it is not sustainable. contractors that price this low treat workers like dogs. its horrible. Check the license. a license does not guarantee a lot but it is a start.

in so far as selecting bids, the general rule is never take the lowest bid. this is not a big job. if it was, i would take the time to explain what can go wrong here for you but i suspect you are going to do what you will anyway no matter what i am saying. if you wish to know more, ask away. i have watched things go wrong on this board for over a decade and have worked in this industry since 1980.

I’m just curious to know how these people make a living and this might be people that are not licensed don’t pay insurance and anything else nor even think about their overhead for $5 a square foot so if you had a basement that is about 400 to 500 ft.² they’re only charging you $2000-$2500 and the labor to bring down all this tile, install, cuts and everything else associated with that and then to grout it all for $5 these prices are from the 1980s and these do not justify any licensed contractors pricing on this website. This is why the industry is shot. It’s because people that hire these people lower the industry standards, it’s kind of to say if you had to go into the court of law nobody could enter in except they are admitted to the Bar, so we too should not allow people that are unlicensed to be doing work and the Department of consumer affair says get a license and if they can’t get it well then they should not be working in this industry. Let me see if t hose people pay for advertisement and anything else that is required in a business. For five dollars a square foot you’ll be lucky if you even can buy a new tool!!!

Thanks . I agree, and def not doing anything extra ordinary in the basement. It is nicely leveled so the required skill should be at a minimum. We found a $5 installer- which’s saves us a few grand.

I wouldn’t use someone who is a specialist in bathroom tile, which is often a showpiece of the home, and needs an element of perfection because the eye is drawn to geometric inconsistencies, to do a big flat basement floor. Seems like two different skill sets. Unless you are doing an ancient Rome style mosaic or something.

I totally agree with Steve, as I see jobs I do not ask the client what they want done, many homeowners do not know what really needs to be done for a sound tile job or anything else, unless they have done their homework, so to answer your question your should first consider, how is the existing cement that is their, do you need to break that and install new, do you get water in your basement, and if so what you need to do before you do the tile work. So ponder and ask your tile guy these basic questions first.

I just googled the cost for this and it returned a result that said nationally it can run anywhere from $4 to $25 per sq foot. That makes 8 seem low in nyc.

And look at what cate is saying and hope that your tile person is truly skilled enough to advise you of other issues. It is sad to say but a lot of trades people today will walk in and do only what a customer asks for without saying “you will need this to prep or do the job correctly”. Some of them do not know and some know but if they need the job, they don’t want to run the cost up and scare the customer off. When we catch them doing things wrong and challenge them they say “the customer said do it this way” and they never challenge the customer or took the trouble to advise the customer of a better way.

Tiling, roofing, masonry, and painting are the areas we see people performing poor work because the job will look good or do what it should for a few months or a year. Long enough for “the check to clear”. They it cracks or peels or seems and joints open.
