45 or 90 minute fire-rated doors on a 2 family house?

Hi y’all, does one need a 45 or 90 minute door if I have a 2 family house? This is for interior doors that are the entry doors to the two different apartments. My architect says 45 but a doors salesman said 90…

Also, what is the fire-rating for walls in a common hallway in such a house?

And, any recs for where to buy such doors? Thanks!!

I like the tape idea. Although in a bind, you might be able to save the label with a heat gun. Sometimes it’s a metal plaque, and sometimes it’s just a sticker from what I’ve seen.

Just passing along a piece of advice the DOB inspector gave me during a final inspection. He said never let anyone paint over the fire rating label on the door otherwise its going to be trouble in the future. Apparently its pretty common. I put a piece a clear shipping tape over my label to protect it.

another thing about these doors. we had one put in from LI fire, in an elevator room, and i looked and it did not have a rating label. I told the contractor. he said, “i will carry it back and get them to put a label on”. he returned with the same door so i questioned that. he said “its the same door, they charged me ?? ($150?) for the label”. in SOME cases, you are paying for the label.

@bored; in most cases, in retail, i would say this is true. jewelry sales, car salesman, home depot, furniture salesman. I suspect some sorts of suppliers that sell to specific industries (we buy a lot of commercial product) get used to dealing with educated people such as architects and contractors and for that reason they talk to the point of what that person needs (when i have to buy a specialized finish, they know that they better talk to what i need or i will suspect they do not know what they are talking about or do not understand what i am looking for; both are bad scenarios for them). sometimes commercial vendors DO NOT put their in house sales team on commission just to prevent this (like you, i am suspicious and i have asked).

when dealing with commercial specialized suppliers, they often want to be viewed as experts in their field. i might make the call just to see if someone gives me an off hand answer or tries to BS me.

You likely need a 1 hour partition which means a 45 min door for a 2 family. It may be easier / faster to get a 90 minute door however if timing is an issue. Not sure there would be much of a price difference between the two.

The funny thing is my original architect had specified 90 minute, then when I had to switch architects the new architect said just 45 was enough. So not sure who is right, of course the current architect thinks that they’re correct..

On this one, I would trust an architect not a salesman. One’s job is to know the code, the other’s is to sell you more expensive stuff.

there was a post on here about 3 or 4 months back about this very same thing and i think one of the people came on here and stated something with certainty.
