Great City NYC Construction - Any experiences?

Hi, I’m bidding out a major construction project for a one family house in South Slope (gut reno plus new two story rear extension) and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Amin at Great City NYC Construction Inc. I’ve seen his sign around the area a bit lately, so hoping someone can provide feedback. Thanks

I googled this company and came up with this discussion that scared me so much I almost stopped payment on the check I had just given them. Actually, I tried and it was too late. So they came and, to my delight, did a great job repairing our water damaged ceilings and waterproofing our window sills and a bunch of other indoor and outdoor work. After my panic, they wound up far exceeding our expectations. So, there’s our experience..

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to stir up such a debate. I appreciate all of the feedback – and it seems like I should look elsewhere based on the very mixed response. If someone has a GC that they would recommend, please post here or send me a message. It seems everyone is so busy that they are unwilling to take on new jobs or are sending outrageous bids. my last comment to the obvious cretin who accuses me of making things up is that i think the difference in grammar between those who endorse vs those who do not speaks volumes. Now i realize why so many of the houses people claim are renovated in their sales listings are gut-worthy to the rest of us.

@brandat11 @dorkofwindsor I really think both of you guys are making stuff up, also i been using Amin for years and so does my friends around the area and everyone seems to be happy with his work and the years of recommendation and list of references that he provides speaks for it self.

john320 – why is he still around? good question. Because he isn’t totally horrible vs competition. All i can say is my own personal experience. And my opinion is that people don’t know any better and hire who they see their neighbor used, and the guy says he does “everyone’s” work. So being familiar goes a long way in this totally scummy industry. Having said that, i haven’t heard him walk away from a job and steal people’s money, so there’s a plus. Also, my personal opinion is that most people seem to have lower expectations than me. But to reiterate what i have said here before, I really do like his one main stoop expert, but the rest of the lot is so-so at best. Supervision of the laborers is spotty at best, and they need much more direction. Is that better than complete disasters with other rock bottom budget contractors that my neighbors have hired? Absolutely!! I’ve seen MUCH (MUCH!) worse, which i just cannot even fathom, except people don’t have a lot of money and pick the lowest bidder and live to seriously regret it. In summation, i would never hire him do work inside the house. You can absolutely do worse, but you can surely do better. Also, i thought Amin is trying to transition the business to his son in law, who has little experience and does not appear to be committed like a business owner should.

Run not walk away from anything to do with Amin. He put in a patio at my Windsor Terrace home a few years ago. Within the year it had lots of cracks. When I complained he calmly told me it was not pitched properly ( as if someone else did it). Unfortunately for me, he also did work on the cement steps in the front of my house. Even worse. While explaining that the cracks that appeared did not result from his shoddy workmanship, and that the twisting of my wrought iron fence that he removed and poorly reinstalled was due to another cause, he also had the nerve to ask me to keep my voice down when we discussed this on the street so others would not hear. He wanted me to make another appointment to discuss this. His brick pointing, at least, was OK but nothing more. Stay away from this guy and his subs in all their incarnations.

I have one neighbor who had a ton of problems w/ Amin & ultimately took him to court & another neighbor who thinks he’s terrific. Could be a matter of one job’s having been subbed but it’s why I don’t recommend him.

@dorkofwindsor if your talking about Amin Home Improvement then your wrong, thats the only AMIN i know and his been around this area since 1984\. How can a person or a company still be around if they do shitty job or don’t follow the codes or hard to communicate with and with price his very straight forward, even though his price is a little expensive but the quality of his job is on point. Anyways GREAT CITY OF NYC CONSTRUCTION use to be Amin Construction Not Amin Home Improvement and from what i found out from personal experience he use to get jobs because people use to think his Amin Home Improvement but don’t know why he changed the name anyways Amin Home Improvement did my facade in 1st street and I’m very satisfied with it.

If this is the same Amin guy that does the stoops and exterior work, sometimes Amin just subs these things out and takes a cut. Personally i would look elsewhere. He is old school and does not keep up on codes (I know this from personal experience), hard to communicate with and plays games about communication to raise the price mid project. I am being very polite about this – there are so many better contractors out there. If not same guy then disregard.
