Frustrated trying to find contractor for bathroom remodel

I’m getting awfully frustrated trying to find a contractor to remodel our Windsor Terrace bathroom. Its a typical 5×10 apartment bathroom from the 1930’s and we are looking to completely retile floor, walls, and shower, replace toilet, and other minor changes (maybe light in shower, etc.) I’ve had three come to look so far, and they never get back to me! I’m waiting two weeks now…is this normal? We really were impressed with one guy, seemed to really understand what we wanted, spent a lot of time measuring, etc. and its been two weeks now and no estimate! Another we liked, its only been about a week, but still…I thought people would be eager for jobs in this economy. Meantime I have emailed a few from Craigslist (I know, not the best option, but didn’t know where to turn) and no one even responds. Bottom line, can anyone recommend a reliable contractor for a job like this? Needs to be licensed and insured, and would prefer someone who can handle it all: the plumbing and minor electric as well as the tiling and final painting. Thanks.

When hiring contractors to do work on my small coop’s building, I usually found I had to chase them down with calls for weeks, especially the ones whose work quality seemed really good.  Frustrating, but part of the process.  Sometimes they’d eventually come through with a detailed written estimate (our board liked to compare them, part of the fun of collective decision making) and get hired.  Others never came through with the estimate…I figured they were busy and didn’t want to undertake smaller jobs when they had  bigger ones.  And that they’d rather spend their time doing actual work that would pay them, rather than the paperwork of estimates, which might never result in a paid job.  Keep calling them.
