Converting a Frame House to Brick
Well, I couldn’t afford a brownstone so I made do with what I could afford. And I picked a very pretty brick and with the porch and some very expensive landscaping, I think my house is nice. It’s a whole lot better looking than it was. Plus, I have an inground pool so suck it.

I found myself daydreaming and wondering if it were even possible to convert a frame house to a brick house. Is this something that would make any sense? Any records indicating it has been done in Brooklyn? Am I crazy? If someone really decided they wanted to tackle this, operationally/logistically what has to be done? Any ideas of cost?
Thanks.

Once upon a time there were three little pigs and the time came for them to leave home and seek their fortunes. Before they left, their mother told them ” Whatever you do , do it the best that you can because that’s the way to get along in the world. The first little pig built his house out of straw because it was the easiest thing to do. The second little pig built his house out of sticks. This was a little bit stronger than a straw house. The third little pig built his house out of bricks. One night the big bad wolf, who dearly loved to eat fat little piggies, came along and saw the first little pig in his house of straw. He said “Let me in, Let me in, little pig or I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in!” “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin”, said the little pig. But of course the wolf did blow the house in and ate the first little pig.

I think really “converting” a house from frame to brick would be more like tearing it down and building another house. Of course there’s always brick veneer.

I would report anyone in my neighborhood to LPC if they tried brick veneer.

I would not recommend brick over a wooden frame.

Don’t change the character of the building by covering up the wood. Have you looked into HardiPlank? Wood homes can look terrific.

You’re not crazy. We did it in ’99 and it came out terrific. I’m gonna say it was about 50 grand at the time but that included a large porch, steps, landscaping planters and doing the driveway with pavers. And a shed on the side. This is a split level house 3bds, 3 baths. Character? My 1957 house didn’t have it. Now it does.
