Asbestos removal

So just as a followup, I ended up going with Leinster Contracting based on the recommendations. I heartily echo all the other recommendations: Super responsive and professional (only a few days between calling them and having the work completed), relatively affordable, came in exactly to the estimate. Now to deal with Con Ed, if only they were this good.

Hi. I just bought a brownstone in bed-stuy. The Con Ed guy was over to wire up the meters; he looked around and said “you have asbestos here, I can’t work until you abate it”. I looked and it appears there is about 3 inches of asbestos insulation on one of the pipes coming out of the wall, with the end broken off. Does anyone have someone they recommend who can get this taken care of? Do we need to have the entire basement inspected now? I’ve read in other threads that for permitted work in a basement you often need an asbestos inspection; will taking care of this now suffice? Thanks.

Are you planning on doing extensive work? You will likely need to get an asbestos inspection if you’re filing plans for any meaningful amount of work.

I recently had an inspection done by Joe Bova from Onsite Environmental. I though he did a great job and was priced reasonably. There was no remediation necessary and I am not sure he does that part. To get a DOB permit, you will need the inspection. (718) 234-7437\.

You don’t need an inspection to know there is Asbestos. Just have it removed with the proper precautions. If you have an ancient Boiler, it will be around there too (boiler insulation, sealing compound)

If that one portion of 3″ of asbestos is all you have, as you say, just wet it and remove it yourself, bag it and throw it away. Sounds like you had it in the past and it was removed except for that one piece, if that is the case.

I would not recommend that you remove it yourself. And it should be disposed of properly. Asbestos is a serious carcinogen, please take precautions so that you do not harm yourself or cause someone else (like the guy emptying your trash) to inhale asbestos particles. We had asbestos in our basement, and we used Leinster Contracting to remove and dispose of it. What Dave said. Double bag it so it doesn’t leak in the trash. If money is no object, do it the right way hiring someone like Leinster or Asbestway. You’ll spend a relative fortune for guys to come in with hazmat suits and all their gear for 3 inches of stuff to get rid of.

DIY if it’s a small amount. yes, it’s dangerous stuff, but you’re not working with it everyday. a one time exposure to it won’t harm you.
