Looking for recommendations for help with backyard garden design/landscaping

I’ve finally decided to turn the dirtpile in my backyard into a proper backyard/garden & need help 🙂  I own half the backyard of the brownstone which is accessed from the stairs that come out of my parlor floor apartment — I’m looking to do something that’s clean/modern & low-maintenance.  My area measures approximately 9.5 ‘ wide by 30’ long.  While I do have a budget, I also don’t want anything that’s going to break the bank too!  If you have any recommendations for people who are reasonable and who you’ve liked working with that would be great — thanks!!

Have a look at James Stephenson’s work; there was an article in the NYT a couple of years ago http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/04/garden/04reno.html?scp=11&sq=james%20stephenson&st=cse for a garden about your size, and it’s full of tips to plan and get started.

We used Bill Fidelo for design and A&A Innovative for landscaping. Things took a little longer than planned this summer, so we didn’t get plants in, but the hardscape looks great and we can’t wait for Spring.
